Thoroughbreds aren’t the only animals that run around Kentucky! BeerFit Louisville is coming to Papa John’s Cardinal Stadium on June 18, 2016, and that means you can choose between the Classic 5k distance or signature Brew Mile race to get your run on, and earn your beer.
It doesn’t matter if you’re a casual runner, or a Boston Marathon-qualifying speed machine: BeerFit events are suited for all runners, regardless of pace or comfort level while wearing thigh-baring shorts. To prove it — and start recruitment early — we’ve rounded up the best Louisville-based running groups that believe in celebrating their wins with beer to encourage you to start training early.
Derby City Run Club
There’s an old saying that goes, “You can lead a horse to water, but you can’t make him drink.” Well, we’re coming up with a new one: “You can lead a runner to beer, but you better buy the first round!” Embodying this mantra is the Derby City Run Club, a free social running club for all levels, from first-time 5k runners to seasoned marathoners. Their mission is to promote fitness, friends and community in the Louisville area, and they do a pretty good job of that by inviting runners join their Monday, Wednesday and Thursday evening runs that meet and end at various bars in the area. Come for the run, and stay for the food and drink specials. You’re sure to meet new friends — especially if the first round is on you.
Fun Runs With Fleet Feet Sports
As runners, we’re not afraid to drop a pretty penny for a new pair of sneakers — which is why scoring deals on post run drinks is always a good perk! It’s also in your favor to get pretty cozy with your local running store, which is why showing up to Fleet Feet Sports Louisville Fun Run Series is in your best interest. Their 3 to 5-mile social runs are followed by steals and deals at local bars (and the occasional demonstration from another running gear brand), so you can save money and get tight with the customer service representatives! Follow their event page and their Facebook group for updates on runs, races and discounts on beer!
Iroquois Hill Runners
This close knit community of runners doesn’t just limit themselves to beer. The club will host both an ‘Ice Cream Social 5k’ and a ‘Pizza Pig-out 5k’ over the summer, which we are totally going to if we are in the area. Dedicated to promoting running as a sport and an enjoyable pastime, the Iroquois Hill Runners offers everything from their own events to race support, training sessions, informal group runs, and, our personal favorite, social activities. For just $15 per year, membership entitles you to run in club sponsored races for just $2. Stay updated on what’s coming up on the calendar via the company newsletter.
